Suffering from an addiction can be a very painful experience; life can seem hopeless. The sufferer can feel worthless and ashamed. Sometimes it can be extremely difficult to convince an addict that there are solutions to their addiction and that life can become better.

As the path to addiction didn’t happen in a day, the cure isn’t going to be a quick fix, either. Many addicts can become overwhelmed with the idea of a long process that will seemingly have no end.

If you have a loved one that is suffering from addiction, whether it be alcohol or drugs, it is in their best interest for you to do all you can to help them get into treatment.

Sometimes one might have a tendency to think that an addict can’t be helped until they’ve reached rock bottom, but this is not necessarily true. As a friend or relative of an addict you have a responsibility to help them understand that there is help out there, as well as hope.

Realize that although most addicts start on the path of addiction voluntarily, once there is sufficient substance abuse, the addict is no longer in a place of reason. Prolonged drug abuse alters the brain and makes it impossible for a user to overcome a serious addiction by themselves.

Your job is to help them seek help as quickly as possible. Your job is also to do this without exhibiting any judgment or disgust. One of the factors that can lead an addict to seeking help, is to for them feel the unconditional love of family and friends.

It can save their life.

Although addiction to video games is not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, at least not at the moment, many believe that playing video games is addicting. Why? Mostly because of the escape that video games give those who play them. While playing, you no longer have to think about the real world or what is causing you stress.

The problem is that this high that players feel, which causes dopamine to be released, can become addicting — especially if the life outside the game is not very good. Sometimes, kids are playing video games just because they’re bored, but it’s easy to turn a quick game into an all-nighter and the results can be detrimental. For kids and teens it can lead to lack of sleep which affects school performance. For adults, it can affect how they’re able to perform at school and could possibly lead to being fired.

What Parents Can Do

The best thing to do is prevent the addiction in the first place. There’s nothing inherently wrong with these games; it’s when they’re played all too often that there’s a problem. So the first thing that parents can do is limit how much the games are played. They should only be played after your kids’ homework is done and all chores are completed. Depending on age, the time limit should be between 30 and 90 minutes a day.

Games can be a great way to relax and practice problem solving skills, but be sure that you and your children are limiting how much you play so that there isn’t a chance that it could become an addiction.

You’d think that years and years of studying in medical school would prepare the potential doctors of the next generation well enough to handle just about any case you can imagine in a doctor’s office or emergency room, right? Right. So then why would there be so many cases of medical malpractice?

Why would a California medical malpractice lawyer have to go after this or that doctor for an injury wrongfully caused upon a patient due to some error in the ER? The answer’s simple: it’s not a lack of education, or a lack of experience, rather instead a horrible addiction to an illegal substance or illegal substances!

Substance abuse: a horrifying problem for anyone, even the medical practitioner. Statistically, this field of work has that unfortunate mindset — the fact that drugs are so accessible. Moreover, think about how intensive the job is for a doctor or nurse. It’s a 24/7 profession. They deal with death; they deal with tears. They deal with everything that centers around stress.

Makes all those drugs look appealing, doesn’t it? Hopefully not.

The fact is if you’re a medical professional dealing with an addiction, the imperative to seek help is all the more important. Why? Because you’re not just hurting yourself. You’re not just hurting your own family either, although that’s harm enough. More importantly, involving your career — you’re hurting your whole establishment and all the patients involved. So do the right thing — get help, kick the habit. Drugs are not to be messed with.

Many substance abusers are unable to seek treatment due to the high cost of drug and alcohol treatment. It is estimated that drug and alcohol treatment centers can cost anywhere from $5000 all the way up to $23,000 a month. Most people do not have this type of money and cannot afford to pay for their treatment. This is why many substance abusers will try to see if their health insurance will cover the substance abuse treatment center.

Many health insurance providers offer very limited coverage for drug and alcohol treatment centers. There are strict rules and guidelines that outline how the health insurance provider will cover the drug and alcohol treatment centers. Here’s a look at some of the examples of how health insurance providers have covered drug and alcohol treatment centers.

Medical Costs Only. Some health insurance providers will only cover any related medical costs that might be incurred during the day at the drug and alcohol treatment center. This means that all drugs and possibly alternative medicine therapies are cover. The detox process is also covered as it is considered a medical necessity. However, the actual stay at the treatment center as well as the therapy sessions is not covered.

Limited Time Treatment. Some health insurance providers will offer full coverage or percentage off of specific drug and alcohol treatment centers. However, this day must be at a health insurance providers recommended drug and alcohol treatment center, for a specified amount of time, doctor ordered and not within a certain time frame. Generally health-insurance providers will cover a 30 day stay at a drug and alcohol treatment center one every 3 to 5 years.

Every health-insurance provider has their own rules and regulations regarding what type of drug and alcohol treatment centers they will provide for. Some health insurance providers will not cover drug and alcohol treatment centers at all, will others offer limited time coverage for those that are suffering from substance abuse problem. Check with your health insurance provider to see what coverage they may offer.

Substance abuse just like any other disease or illness has a number of signs and symptoms that people can use to notice if they or a loved one might be suffering from an addiction. As with any type of illness or disease symptoms of substance abuse can vary from person to person, so what one person has another person might not exhibit. Here’s a look at some of the signs and symptoms that there could be substance abuse going on.

Neglecting Responsibilities. One of the biggest signs and symptoms of a substance abuse problem is if the person is neglecting the regular responsibilities that they would normally not be neglecting. This could be neglecting their workload, school work, household chores and even their parenting responsibilities. These people are neglecting their responsibilities in favor of using drugs or alcohol.

Dangerous Conditions. Drug and alcohol users will normally start to use their substance under dangerous conditions and have no regard for the conditions of their in. Many users will start putting themselves in dangerous positions such as using dirty needles, taking drugs they have no idea of, drinking alcohol and driving and even having dangerous sexual encounters. These dangerous conditions are usually a result of the substance abuser not being able to properly assess the situation due to being under the influence of the drug or alcohol.

Legal Trouble. Getting into legal trouble is a very common sign that there could be substance abuse going on. Constant legal trouble ranging from driving under the influence, stealing, disorderly conduct and other types of legal issues can often be assigned that there is a serious problem with substance abuse.

Problems with Relationships. Another common sign that there could be a problem with substance abuse is a developing problem with relationships.

With the success of TV shows that center around interventions in confronting people with substance abuse problems many people have started to consider running their own intervention. While interventions can sometimes be successful, if intervention is done in the wrong way it could potentially be a disaster. If you are considering running in intervention here are some things to consider.

Seek The Help of Professional. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers have professional interventionist who can help run the intervention so that it is done properly. Many people might want to consider using one of these professionals as these professionals can help guide you through the process and make sure that you have the best chance for success.

Try to Confront When Not Intoxicated. This might be hard but it is recommended whether you run intervention with a professional or not that you try to confront the individual when they are not intoxicated. This allows you the best chance to reason and discuss the problem with the person with the problem.

Don’t Place Blame. Interventions are designed to tell the substance abuser exactly what they are putting each individual and their family through. However, the individuals in the family needs to make sure that they are not placing the blame on the person with the substance abuse but merely outlining facts. There is a fine line between placing blame and stating facts. The substance abuser will automatically feel as if they are being blamed the matter how things are being worded so the important part is to make sure that you choose your words carefully. Many people will often write out letters or practice what they’re going to say before they actually run the intervention.

While your friends and family may notice that you have a drug or alcohol problem just from the way that you are acting there are actually many types of physical warning signs that there is a drug abuse or alcohol abuse problem going on.

The hardest part about having a substance abuse problem is the ability to admit that you have a problem. Once you have committed your problem you will generally start looking for treatment center to help you deal with your addiction. The problem is that once you start looking into treatment centers can often be overwhelming as there are hundreds of different treatment centers out there for substance abuse. Luckily, with a little thought you can successfully narrowed down whatever treatment centers you’re looking for and help you make the decision of which treatment center might be right for you.

Here’s a look at some of the characteristics of a treatment center that you should consider. These characteristics will help you narrow down which treatment centers are right for you.

Inpatient versus outpatient. Inpatient versus outpatient is the biggest decision that you have to make regarding treatment centers. Inpatient treatment centers include all therapy being done in one location and are generally for solid block of time such as 30 to 90 days. Outpatient therapy is usually done first set block of time a couple times a week. Generally, inpatient therapy is more intense than outpatient therapy.

Treatment Style. Each treatment center will have their own way of treating the substance abuse problem. Some treatment centers will focus upon the conventional medication way of treating the substance abuse problem. This can include using prescription medications and other types of conventional medicine to treat the addiction. Other treatment centers will focus solely upon the alternative treatment style and focus upon relaxation, meditation, acupuncture and massage therapy. A third option is the combination of conventional medicine and alternative medicine. Deciding what type treatment you wish to receive will help you narrow down whatever treatment centers are right for you.

Therapy Sessions. Therapy is a major part of the substance abuse treatment center. You’ll want to make sure that you are receiving the therapy that you want while in your treatment. Check to see what type of therapy is the treatment center offers. Most will offer individual and group therapy. Some will even offer family therapy.

Many people who have a substance abuse problem know they have a problem. The problem is that after time these people will generally start to consider their habits and behaviors normal and will slowly start to slip into denial. Denial is a perfectly normal part of substance abuse problems as it is a way for the substance abuser to rationalize their behavior and give reason to why they are doing it. If you think you may have a substance abuse problem here is some questions you can ask yourself to help you decide if you’re drinking or drug use might be a problem.

Do you often feel as if you are unable to stop the drugs and alcohol at any time? Many drug users believe that they can stop at any time but internally they know that they cannot stop their drug or alcohol use.

Are you overcome with feelings of guilt about your drug or alcohol use? Many drugs and alcohol users have extreme feelings of guilt about their use for drugs and alcohol. This is because they know that the use is wrong but still rationalize that it is okay.

Are drugs and alcohol being used as a relaxant or way to make you feel better? Drug and alcohol use can usually turn into a problem when it is being used as a way to relax the body or to cover up serious problems.

Are people complaining about your use of drugs or alcohol? Those that have a drug and alcohol problem often have others such as their boss, friends, or family members that complain about the use and bring up that it is causing problems.

There are various health risks that are associated with the substance abuse. The person who is involved in this addiction to various drugs and other unhealthy products may suffer from certain side effects. These effects can even be life threatening at times. Various systems of the body are affected by the use of these spurious substances.

One of the most common substance abuse is the use of tobacco. Tobacco is used either while smoking cigarettes or when the person is chewing tobacco. The nicotine that is present in the tobacco can cause the person who is using it to suffer from various health problems including lung cancer. Other than cancer, the respiratory system of the person can also be affected because of the fact that the nicotine causes damage to the lungs.

The use of excessive alcohol can lead to various problems in the liver. Though other systems in the body may also be affected because of excessive consumption of alcohol, one of the systems that is severely affected is the liver. There are many people who have been substance abusers and have suffered from liver problems like liver cirrhosis, where there is uncontrolled bleeding in the liver. Death of certain parts of the liver, cancer of the liver and other diseases of the liver are very common in people who are alcoholics.

Drug addiction is the other common problem that can lead to various health risks. Many people who are chronic drug addicts may even die because of a fatal overdose of the drug. All the drugs can lead to various systems of the body being affected. Since many of the drug abusers share the same needle to inject themselves, they are at a high risk of being affected by AIDS. This is one of the common problems seen in substance abusers.

If you, or someone you know, has an alcohol addiction, you may want to consider joining AA. AA stands for Alcoholics Anonymous and is a group of men and women that get together for the sole purpose of getting and staying sober.

With its over 2 million members, AA works to get people to stop drinking by focusing on one day at a time. Alcoholics Anonymous has a 12 steps to recovery program and is also successful due to their group setting. Many people believe that by talking and sharing your experiences with a group, it helps to heal you faster because you realize that there are other people out there going through the same thing as you.

AA was started in 1935 by a stockbroker and a doctor, both of whom were alcoholics at the time. They founded AA in order to help themselves stay sober together, and ended up reaching out to help others that also suffered from alcoholism.

Anyone attending a meeting in AA can expect it to usually start out with a talk from the leader or other speakers for the day. Afterwords, you are then able to listen to others share their stories and invited to speak about your own. Everything about AA is voluntary. They will not try to get information from you and will not try to force you in to anything.

You are free to leave a meeting anytime you want and you are also free to bring a family member to any of the informative meetings that they hold.

This program has been successful for many people and may be the answer many more are looking for. By helping yourself or someone you love, you are taking the big leap in getting the treatment needed.

Try out a meeting if you aren’t sure. Make sure it’s something you can handle before you take the plunge to make yourself healthy again.

Many people tend to drink too much and experience the effects of a hangover. Some people who like to party though, know exactly what to do beforehand to prevent themselves from getting a hangover the next day. These people tend to know the tricks and tips in order for them to drink more. These people also tend to have a substance abuse problem and may need to get professional help for that.

There are some things you can do to prevent getting a hangover the next day. The main prevention from a hangover is to not drink at all. However, if you do want to drink, make sure you limit yourself. Set a limit for how many drinks you will have for the night and stick to it. Do not let anyone talk you in to drinking more than you planned to, because that’s how hangovers tend to happen.

Drink water while you are drinking alcohol. Water will work to dilute the alcohol going into your system and make the effects less harsh. Try alternating between water and alcohol if you are out and having a good time.

You can even take some of those over-the-counter remedies they have for preventing hangovers. These pills usually require you to take one before you start drinking and a few others throughout the course of the night. They also advise that you drink a full glass of water while you are taking each pill. It may be the water that has the effects on preventing a hangover, so if you want to save some money, stick to just alternating between water and alcohol.

If you or someone you know may have an alcohol problem and are constantly using these methods to prevent hangovers, then you may have a problem. Seek help from a professional or join a support group such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

Smokers can really struggle when they’re trying to quit. It’s not an easy battle, and many people quit multiple times before they actually manage to stay away from cigarettes for good. Others give up and decide that they’re just going to smoke, regardless of the consequences. They may lack the willpower to quit, or they simply aren’t willing to go through the struggles to stay free of cigarettes. If you’re one of the people who really wants to quit but you aren’t sure what you can do – or you’ve tried a lot of things and always failed – there is another option.

One of the newest offerings is the electronic cigarette. It offers vaporized nicotine for the smoker to inhale, and releases only water vapor. While not as good as quitting entirely, it isn’t as damaging to the lungs as all of the chemicals that are normally inhaled when a person smokes. In addition, it can be used in places where people are not allowed to smoke standard cigarettes, because there is no actual smoke released. There’s no fire, only a battery-powered device to vaporize the nicotine that comes in a replaceable cartridge. As it grows in popularity, it has provided smokers with another option when they want to quit.

By using the electronic option for cigarettes, smokers become less dependent on the chemicals and their body begins to heal. The nicotine that’s being inhaled is still not something that should be done long-term, and quitting is still the best choice. For some people, though, this is a long road and whether they will arrive at their destination is uncertain. If they cannot or will not quit – or if they simply need another option to help them reach their goal of being smoke-free – the electronic cigarette can provide them with a healthier choice.

An alcoholic doesn’t always have to be a person that blacks out or even a wino begging for money on the street. A functioning alcoholic is a person that is medically considered an alcoholic yet is still able to function with their daily life.

These types of alcoholics tend to do everything normal just like people who aren’t addicted to alcohol. One of the reasons an alcoholic admits that he has a problem is mainly because of the embarrassing effects alcoholism has on him. However, a functioning alcoholic has a very difficult time admitting addiction because they don’t have bad things going on in their lives due to alcoholism. There aren’t that many events happening or things being effected in their lives because of their drinking problem.

While a functioning alcoholic may think they don’t have a problem because they’ve never blacked out, or even been in trouble with the law, they still do have a problem. A big one. There’s may be worse than others because they are in complete denial and it is often harder to get help for them.

These types of alcoholics have built up a tolerance for alcohol, which is why it becomes harder for then to get drunk. They then need to drink more and more alcohol in order to feel any kinds of effects from it.

A functioning alcoholic may know that they have a problem, but it will be hard for them to stop because their withdrawal symptoms can be severe. They may even experience symptoms a few hours after their last drink, which makes them want to drink more to curb the symptoms.

If you know someone that has an alcohol addiction, get help for them. Stage an intervention, or even talk to them privately and help them to realize that they have a problem that could potentially kill them.

If you are the type of person that likes to party a lot and have a good time, you may have a substance abuse problem. While you may not realize how much you are drinking at the time, you will definitely feel the effects of it the next day in the form of a hangover.

A hangover is full of physical as well as mental symptoms that can occur after you have had a heavy night of drinking. Hangovers symptoms vary, mainly depending on how much you had to drink the night before.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism lists many hangover symptoms such as headache, sore muscles, extreme thirst, nausea, vomiting, unable to sleep, being sensitive to light and sound, depression, fatigue and even anxiety. Each person is different and experiences their own symptoms or combination of symptoms.

A hangover usually happens anywhere from four hours after the drinking stops, to the next day after a night of sleep occurs. Hangovers start when the blood alcohol content starts to lower. The worst of the symptoms happen when the blood alcohol content returns to zero.

The symptoms of a hangover will subside anywhere from eight to 24 hours after they started.

If you know someone that always complains about hangovers, then they may have a drinking problem. The best way to avoid a hangover is to never get one in the first place.

Many people tend to experience a horrible hangover which is enough to make them control themselves when drinking. Others however, don’t mind the symptoms so much and would rather party and abuse alcohol. Those people should seek help for their substance abuse problem and get to the bottom of the real issue.

There are meetings given by Alcoholics Anonymous where anyone can attend and get help for any problems they may have.

Living with an alcoholic can be quite tough. You have to deal with their ups and downs, mood changes and their drinking rages. You soon learn that an alcoholic tries to hide their addiction from you and you may catch them in numerous lies. Living with an alcoholic can be very difficult, but you don’t have to be there getting abused possibly physically and emotionally every day.

An alcoholic will try to cover up their drinking. They will become skilled at the art of lying. They will tell you they are doing one thing, and later you will find out that they were at the bar all day. A person addicted to alcohol may even try to steal from you in order to support their habit.

You don’t have to live with an alcoholic that isn’t willing to change. They can easily start to bring you down with them. You may want to help them, but if they are unwilling to accept help from you then you need to start looking out for yourself.

Ask them if they are willing to go get treatment. Offer to go with them, as maybe they are afraid to do it alone. Go to some Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with them. Help them realize that there are other people out there with problems just like them.

If they will not do anything to help themselves, then you should leave. It may have gotten to the point where you have low self-esteem because of them. You need to get it back and live your own life again. While it may be the hardest thing you have ever done, getting away from an alcoholic to save your own life could be the best thing you’ve ever done for yourself.

If you know someone with a substance abuse problem, try to get them the proper help that they need before it’s too late.

It may be hard to live with a family member that is abusing or addicted to alcohol. There can be a fine line between abuse and addiction, but one thing is for sure – you need to get them the help they need before it becomes too late.

If someone in your family is abusing and addicted to alcohol, they may experience blackouts, loss of control, job problems and major concern from family members that notice their behavior changes.

First, you want to contact someone that may be able to help you and your family member get the correct assistance they need. You may want to talk to a counselor, or even a doctor for references on where you could go for help. Once you have contacted someone that can help, they may give the addict an evaluation to determine the degree of severity of their problem.

If you are afraid of confronting a family member that you think has an alcohol abuse problem, just be honest with them. Talk with them face-to-face and let them know your concerns. If you try to beat around the bush, they will sense your uneasiness about it and will most likely deny they have a problem. If you are firm with them and let them know your honest thoughts, then they may sit down and listen to you.

You also want to make sure that you don’t make it easier for them to abuse alcohol. Don’t hide their bottles from them, they will always go out and get more. Don’t call in sick for them at work, because that is just excusing their behavior. You don’t want to be an enabler for them, you want them to get the help they need.

Alcohol abuse is a very serious problem that needs attention immediately before it becomes too late. A drunk driver can kill themselves as well as other innocent people.

Pot smoking hippies from the 1960’s have grown into middle-aged Americans across our country, and unfortunately older people between 50 and 59 are continuing to use drugs in the 2000’s.

A survey conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services determined that 8 percent of people between the ages of 50 and 59 used an illicit drug of some sort. The survey said most of them used marijuana, but many use prescription drugs, pain medications, ant-anxiety pills, and sleeping pills. Between 2002 and 2008, the percentage of potheads and pill users in their 50’s grew by over 50 percent.

Rightfully so, researchers are very worried that lifetime drug use by baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) is on the rise, and will complicate the lives and health of many aging Americans. Peter Delaney, Director of the Office of Applied Studies, mentioned that there are so many people in the 50 to 59 age bracket needing substance abuse help that the number of treatment facilities needs to double in the near future.

Delaney said the problem with older users is that drugs cause greater impairment, as people get older. As physiology slows down with age, it takes a lot longer to process drugs through the body. In other words, drugs like marijuana stay in the body’s system for longer periods of time. Also, a mix of marijuana and prescribed pills that lower blood pressure can produce lethal side effects. Unknowing drug users in their 50’s can easily land themselves and extended stay in the hospital for mixing marijuana and pain pills.

The substance abuse administration also queried over 20,000 adults over 50 and found that 5.2 percent of adults in the 50 to 59 age group used marijuana between 2006 and 2008. In addition, 2.9 percent of them took prescription drugs illegally. Lastly, 7.9 percent of these adults said they had taken some type of illicit drug as well.

Methamphetamine is a man-made chemical with properties that are very similar to adrenaline. Methamphetamine (commonly referred to as meth) affects the nervous system with a highly addictive stimulant. The common street names for meth are crank, crystal, speed, ice, and glass. For over three decades, meth has been the mostly widely produced controlled substance in the U.S. Unfortunately, many young people in the U.S. are meth users, and the numbers continue to rise. Meth can be manufactured secretly in meth labs throughout the country. Many of these so-called meth labs are found in people’s homes. The fact that it can be made so easily means that it is also easily sold and distributed. Aside from heroin and cocaine, meth is the most dangerous and lethal drug available in our society.

Meth is a powerful stimulant, and it can keep awake for hours at a time. It also decreases the user’s appetite, and increases his/her activity. The effects of meth are much the same as methadrine (or speed), a popular drug of the 1960’s. Younger adults took speed so that they could stay up all night studying for exams in college. Users say that meth gives you a brief, intense sensation when snorted or injected.

When a user does meth, a neurotransmitter called dopamine is released to the pleasure areas of the brain, and he/she experiences an immediate adrenaline rush or feeling of euphoria, as users typically describe it. People who take the drug also say they feel a sense of well being. Just like any other drug, the user needs to take larger doses of it in order to obtain the same high as before. Increased doses and prolonged use of meth produces feelings of irritability, depression, anger, and paranoia. Users also experience delusional thinking and visual impairment. Some even have visual or auditory hallucinations.

Most meth users go without food or sleep for days, injecting meth into their systems every two or three hours in order to stay high. This type of binging occurs until the user runs out of meth, overdoes, or becomes too delirious to continue taking the drug.

Being a teenager in today’s society is a lot more stressful than days past. Expectations are very high for adolescents. They’re expected to have excellent grades and keep up with the other kids in sports, school clubs, and other social events. Sometimes the stress becomes unbearable, and teenagers turn to drugs to help deal with it. If you’re concerned that your teen might be using drugs, there are several warning signs to look for in your adolescent’s behavior that could be indicators.

The following are some of the warning signs or indications of substance abuse:

Evidence of drugs or paraphernalia. Teens often feel you’re invading their privacy when you search through their personal belongings, but it never hurts to look for blatant physical signs of drugs or paraphernalia around the house. For example, marijuana smoke has a very strong and distinct odor. It doesn’t smell anything like cigarette smoke at all. If your teen comes home wreaking of marijuana smoke, don’t be afraid to confront him/her with some questions about what they’ve been doing that evening.

Behavioral problems. If your teen suddenly seems disinterested in school and other activities like sports and social events, ask them about it. A major deterrent from drug use of any kind is simple, honest communication with your teen. We’re not recommending that you become nosey or intrusive, but it’s always a good idea to take a genuine interest in your teen’s welfare. Let him/her know that you care about their well-being. A simple question like, “How is school going,” is always a good opening to a good conversation with your son or daughter.

Emotional distance, depression, or fatigue. Young teenagers should be full of vitality and energy. They really shouldn’t act listless or apathetic in any way. After all, they’re young, and have a whole life ahead of them. If your teenage suddenly seems disinterested or depressed, ask them about it. Again, you don’t want to appear nosey, but a little bit of care and interest will go a long way. Sometimes teens just need a little push to get them going in the right direction.

Teenagers in today’s society are faced with challenges, stress, and confusion. As a result, many teens fall prey to substance abuse in hopes to deal with everyday problems and challenges, only to discover bigger problems by turning to drugs as solution. As a teen, it’s difficult to predict problems that can occur down the road. Younger people are more impetuous, and seek and immediate solution to problems. A small circle of friends at school may use drugs, and those kids say that there’s no harm involved. A vulnerable teenager sees his friends, taking drugs and decides to give it a try. After all, what is there to lose? Well, in the long run, there’s plenty to lose, but no one realizes the true facts of drug abuse until it’s much too late.

Today’s adolescents don’t perceive the problems associated with drug use. To them, it’s a harmless way to alleviate stress and escape from reality. At first, taking drugs is just another way to relax and have fun. They don’t realize the risks and consequences involved. Even though adolescent drug abuse doesn’t necessarily lead to problems later on, drug use at any stage in life has negative consequences. Although drug use at any early age doesn’t necessarily lead to addiction later on, it’s like a game of Russian roulette, no different than holding a gun to your head and pulling the trigger, hoping that the chamber is empty.

For most teens, drug use has consequences, including poor academic performance, deteriorating relationships with loved ones, and a general lack of interest in everything life has to offer. Substance abuse changes behavior in teens. A newly discovered obsession with drugs overshadows all other activities. A teen who was previously involved in sports and other productive activities suddenly becomes apathetic. The captain of the swim team stops showing up to practice due to his/her preoccupation with drugs. Everything valuable and important takes a second seat to drug users. Unfortunately, drugs will eventually take precedence over a teenager’s life.

Drug abuse in the U.S. has reached epidemic proportions. It’s difficult to determine why, but people abuse substances like alcohol, tobacco, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, an more. The drug problem in the U.S. is a difficult problem to solve, since the people who use drugs don’t want to admit it. Since it’s against the law, the keep it a secret, and as a result, there are more drug users/abusers in our country than anyone realizes. People use drugs for their own personal reasons, whether they just want to get high or maybe even relieve stress, that high (or temporary feeling of euphoria) comes at a cost to the drug user and to society as well.

The toll for drug abuse can range from extended stays in emergency rooms and hospitals or even jail time. It’s a well know fact that the majority of offenders who spend time in jail are alcohol/drug abusers. It’s a growing problem in the U.S., and drastic measures need to be taken in order to stop it. Finding the right treatment to help prevent drug abuse is challenging, however, medical professionals are gaining a better understanding of the problem through knowledge and research. Since drug abuse often starts at an early age, drug education among teens and younger people is a major key to prevention.

According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, the number of illicit drug users in the U.S. is around 13 million. Since the survey was performed several years ago, the number of drug users has grown significantly. The survey also said that 10% of all Americans either use or abuse alcohol, and 25% of them smoke cigarettes. Despite the health hazards and risks of tobacco, people still smoke cigarettes, saying that it gives them pleasure, increased performance, and less depression. People drink alcohol for many reasons. Although most people say they drink it for a “pick me up,” alcohol actually depresses the brain. It lessens your inhibition, slurs speech, and impairs judgment. For the most part, the disadvantages of alcohol, cigarettes, and other drugs outweigh the advantages.

Since they produce very similar the same effects, Cocaine and Methamphetamine (Meth) are often linked together. Both drugs also belong to the class of drugs called psycho stimulants. Despite the similarities and differences of both drugs, however, they’re both very addictive and extremely dangerous. Both have a strong potential for dependence and abuse as well.

Meth is a chemical, and is man made, while cocaine (or coke) comes from the leaves of a coca plant. You can smoke, inject, or snort either drug. The main difference between the two drugs however, is that meth comes in a pill form, and cocaine typically comes in a powder form, with the exception of crack cocaine. Neither drug has much (if any) practical or medical purpose, however, cocaine can be used as an anesthetic and appetite stimulant.

Meth has a much wider defined area of use than cocaine. Its highest use is in California, Hawaii, and most Western areas of the United States. More recently, meth usage has increased in the urban areas of Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, and Washington. Cocaine has no geographic pattern, but studies have shown that it’s used largely in major metropolitan areas due to the fact that cocaine is very expensive.

As far as effects are concerned, both cocaine and meth are often confused with one another because they both produce the same effects. With both drugs, users experience a quick rush followed by feelings of euphoria or happiness. A meth high can last anywhere between eight and twenty-four hours, depending on the amount of drug ingested into the body. The high from Cocaine lasts only a short time, from twenty to thirty minutes.

Methamphetamine’s high can last from eight to twenty four hours and fifty percent of the drug is removed from the body in twelve hours. Cocaine’s high on the other hand, lasts from twenty to thirty minutes and fifty percent of the drug is removed from the body in one hour. Physiologically, Both meth and cocaine can cause make you irritable can cause anxiety. Both drugs also increase the heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature.

When it comes to teens and prescription drugs, there are several myths surrounding the problem that simply aren’t true. One such myth is that teens buy illegal prescription drugs from drug dealers. Even though some teens know about people who sell drugs at school and on the street, many of them find drugs in their own homes. They steal the pills right from the medicine cabinet without being noticed. The common types of drugs that teens abuse are over-the-counter cough syrup, Ritalin (medication for ADHD), amphetamines, sedatives, and just about anything they can get their hands on.

According to the “Monitoring the Future” survey of 50,000 teens in the U.S., adolescents obtain prescription drugs from the following sources: home, friends, strangers, and illegal pharmacies on the Internet. The study also mentioned that one of the reasons that teen drug abuse is running rampant is that prescription drugs are so readily available.

Teens can get prescription drugs from a variety of sources at no charge. In order to keep prescription drugs away from your teens, hide them in a safe place, and properly dispose of any unused medications. Although many medications may seem harmless, they’re dangerous when misused. Teenagers also need to fully understand the potential dangers of taking prescription drugs for recreational purposes.

Young people also need to understand that taking prescription drugs is illegal. The fact that these drugs are prescriptions doesn’t mean that it’s okay to take them. Too often, teenagers hear from their friends that it’s safer to take prescription drugs as opposed to illegal ones. But it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Teenagers need to realize that doctors go through a very long process when they prescribe drugs. Doctors perform physical examinations, tests, more tests, and medical histories. After all that preparation, a prescription is made, and hopefully the drug produces the expected result. Teenagers thinking about taking prescription drugs need to realize that taking drugs to get high is foolish.

Researchers are discovering a wide range of short- and long-term health problems related to alcohol use among adults and teens. In the past, the U.S. government and British medical professionals have conducted several studies conducted on the health effects of both short-term and long-term use of alcohol among adults. For many years, people have known that alcoholism is a major cause of psoriasis of the liver.

More recently, doctors and clinicians are discovering that alcohol use causes liver damage, pancreatitis, cancer, and brain shrinkage. Alcohol use is also the second leading cause of dementia. It’s recently been discovered that individuals who use excessive amounts of alcohol age quicker. Medical professionals are worried about a steady rise in teen alcohol abuse and the negative effects of alcohol.

According to an article in the British Medical Journal (BMA), there is a rise in the proportion of 11 to 15 year olds who drink alcohol. The article also mentioned that teens are drinking more alcohol when they do drink. Adolescence is a time when young people’s bodies change. It’s a process where their hormones change, and their brain continues to develop. During this time, teenagers also find new friends and contacts. Their social lives become a priority. Teenagers often feel the need to fit in with the rest of crowd. As a result, it’s easy for teenagers to start drinking due to peer group pressure. They often make the wrong decision and turn to alcohol.

The U.S. government also released a publication titled Prevention Alert. The publication talked about teenage alcohol abuse and its negative side effects. The U.S government performed a study on the subject of teens and alcohol abuse. In a publication titled Prevention Alert, the government studies mentioned that memory problems were common amongst adolescents who drank excessively. Moreover, government researchers also claimed that teens that started drinking before age 15 were four times more likely to develop alcohol addiction at a later point in life. The study also attributed alcohol abuse to learning impairments that could affect academic achievement.

Being a teenager in today’s society is a challenge, to say the least. It’s a stressful time for young kids and their parents alike. No one really knows why, but substance abuse has become a part of teenager’s lives. Although most teenagers don’t necessarily become drug addicts in their later years, drug use is without a doubt risky business for teenagers. Young kids don’t realize it, but even the smallest amount of drug use (for example, alcohol and marijuana) has negative consequences. Unfortunately, school and family relationships are undoubtedly the most affected areas of drug abuse.

How Can You Tell When a Teen is Using Drugs?

Possibly the most telling sign of drug abuse is a teen’s preoccupation with drugs. Drug use overshadows all other activities and becomes a part of the teen’s daily life. Friendship groups and family relations change. Other warning signs may include the use of more dangerous drugs like cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin. Since kids do their best to hide their drug use, drug detection is a big challenge for parents.

There’s no single cause for drug addiction in teens. Instead there are several pathways to his/her drug problems. It develops over time, and doesn’t necessarily begin as full-blown problem with addiction.

Warning Signs

Some of the factors that may place teens at risk are:

Lack of supervision from parents
No communication between parents and kids about the dangers of drugs
No set rules or boundaries against drug use
Inconsistent and/or excessive discipline
Conflict in the family
A history of alcohol or dug abuse in the family
Favorable attitudes regarding drug or alcohol use from parents and peers

The following are individual risk factors

Impulsive behavior
Psychological stress
Emotional instability
A perception of low harmfulness from drug use
Extension drug use by peers

Early detection is the key to helping kids with drug problems, and the earlier a drug user seeks help for his/her problems, the better. Now more than ever, parents need to have open communication with their children about drugs.

Admitting that you have a drug problem is hard enough to do with yourself, let alone when you have to share the admission with friends and family. There are so many issues that are tied to drug abuse and depending on the length and depth of your struggle to stay sober, there are likely many relationships and opportunities that have suffered. Whether it’s missed appointments for your job or misunderstandings with family and friends, it’s likely that there are things that you regret because of your substance abuse. Some of these situations you want to remedy, and some you want to avoid reliving. If you are a resident of Tennessee who is coping with substance abuse, it’s time to stop the cycle and find help.

Taking Steps to Overcome Addiction

Coping with substance abuse is difficult and requires the help of trained professionals who understand the nature of addiction and the steps you need to take to begin your lifelong recovery. Understanding the origin of the disease and finding ways to substitute addictive behaviors associated with alcohol and drug abuse with healthy habits is part of the recovery process. Good staff members who are versed in addiction can help you trace back when you started turning to substances to cope and what led to your choices. The next part of the process is dealing with repercussions of your actions and finding ways to mend fences and repair your life as you re-enter society substance free.

Treatment with caring and trained professionals can lead to lifelong sobriety in patients, so finding a facility where you are comfortable is key. If you are ready to put an end to your addiction, contact one of the many Tennessee drug treatment facilities today and start a new, drug-free life.

When it comes to preventing drug abuse among teenagers, doctors, parents, and educators need to figure out a way to integrate honesty and communication with teens in order to help prevent this ongoing problem. But let’s start with some good news. New research indicates that professionals know a lot more today about substance abuse and drug addiction than they knew just a few years ago from today.

Current research indicates that alcohol causes damage to the developing brains of teenagers. Researchers have also discovered that teenagers who use alcohol damage their brains much more than adults who also drink alcohol. This new research refutes previous beliefs that people can drink heavily for several without causing serious neurological injury to their brains. Researchers have also found that the brain continues to develop until people reach their mid twenties, whereas many believed the brain stops developing by the time kids reach 15 or 16 years old. Recent research seems to suggest that young people who drink run the risk of damaging their brains at any early stage in life.

The use of alcohol and drugs changes the way young people think and behave. A pleasure-seeking area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens helps with decision making and thinking. This part of the brain doesn’t reach full maturity until a teen reaches his/her twenties. As result, young teenagers are much less likely to inhibit pleasure-seeking behavior, since this area of their brain isn’t fully mature.

The new findings from researchers also suggest that people who start drinking in their teens face the risk of becoming alcoholics later on in life. A national survey of over 40,000 adults (from Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine) said that 47 percent of adults who started drinking before age 14 became alcohol dependent at some point in their lives. Only 9 percent of the 40,000 became alcohol dependent when they waited until age 21 to start drinking. The results of the survey seem to prove that alcoholism develops at an early age.

After decades of studying drug use, the phenomenon never ceases to puzzle psychiatrists. One psychiatrist reported that his patient said he continues to snort cocaine even though it doesn’t make him high anymore. People’s habits and addictions are hard to explain, and even more perplexing to diagnose and eventually cure. Cocaine addicts prefer a cocaine high more than anything else in the world, including eating, drinking, and sleeping. Apparently the patient mentioned earlier simply lost the euphoria that he experienced from cocaine, and eventually he lost he job. When his wife threatened to divorce him, he sought help from a professional.

It hasn’t been until recently that psychiatrists are beginning to understand the growing problem of substance abuse and addiction in our country. However, for years professional people have understood the attraction of recreational drugs like cocaine, alcohol, and opiates. These people know that their patients take drugs in order to activate the brain’s reward system and experience what many addicts call euphoria.

A medical definition of addiction may be difficult to nail down, but most people know what it means. Put simply, addiction is doing something you can’t stop. even though it interferes with your daily life.

Addictive Characteristics

The following are common characteristics people who are chemically dependent share:

1. A desire for increased amounts of the substance in order to achieve the same effect.
2. Using the substance for longer periods of time.
3. A prolonged desire for the substance (or failed attempts to cut down or stop using it).
4, Spending a lot of time trying to obtain the substance.
5. Giving up or cutting back on everyday activities (important social, work, or family activities).
6. Continued substance use/abuse even though it causes problems (social and legal).

Addictive Behaviors

For most addicts, addiction can involve any type of behavior, an addiction may involve a wide range of behaviors (e.g., gambling, spending money, eating, having sex). However, these behaviors interfere with an addict’s normal life or routine). In addition, addicts tend to get defensive when people criticize their behavior.

Researchers are discovering that drug addiction can be prevented. Community leaders, medical professionals, and families have developed nationwide programs to help put a stop to drug abuse. It’s important for everyone to understand the risks involved when people take drugs. It’s a serious problem in our country, and people need to be aware of it. Most people believe that the majority of people spending time in jail are addicted to drugs, alcohol, or both. It’s important for the community to know that drugs are dangerous. However, by the same token, drug addiction can be prevented as along as people don’t abuse drugs in the first place.

Through years of study, researchers are beginning to understand how drugs interfere with the brain’s communication system. The nerves in your brain are responsible for calling, sending, receiving, and analyzing information. Drugs actually interfere with the brain’s natural communication system in many ways. Interestingly, drugs imitate the brain’s messengers. For example, heroin and marijuana have the same structure as the brain’s chemical messengers, so they are capable of imitating those messengers.

The chemical messengers in your brain are referred to as neurotransmitters. Since drugs have a similar structure as the neurotransmitters, they transmit abnormal messages and fool the brain. Drugs like meth and cocaine transmit large amounts of these messages to the brain.

Drugs also stimulate the reward portion of the brain with a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for controlling peoples actions like movement, emotion, and motivation. It also makes the brain respond favorably to behaviors like eating, sleeping, and spending time with loved ones. Heroin and marijuana over stimulate the brain’s reward and produce a feeling of joy to the user. Drug users describe it as a feeling of euphoria.

In order for drug users to re-experience a feeling of euphoria, they continue to abuse drugs. After repeated usage, the brain reduces the amount of dopamine receptors in the brain. When this happens, it becomes more difficult for the user to achieve the same high as before, which is the reason why people take larger quantities of drugs.

One of the hardest parts of owning any business is getting consumers to patronize it. If business owners hope to succeed, they must ensure that their businesses are present in the public eye. Although this task is often difficult, there are several tips that business owners can follow to ensure they maximize their chances at success.

One method for increasing any company’s chances at being found by the average consumer is to hire an SEO company. “SEO” stands for “search engine optimization,” and it is the product of the new generation of advertising. Basically, an SEO company’s main job is to ensure that when consumers use a search engine to find products online, the particular company’s web site is among the top results. Since most consumers only explore the first page of the search results, it is imperative that successful businesses get on that page. SEO companies make sure that happens.

Another way for businesses to maximize presence in the public eye is to set up social networking profiles. Since the majority of the public uses social networking sites, opening accounts on these sites is an easy way to reach prospective customers. Even just making the visual impression on such websites can prove beneficial, as most people need to see logos repeatedly before the images stick in their minds. By catering to this recent trend, businesses can ensure success.

Finally, businesses can increase their presence by sponsoring charities and events. Even small businesses can afford to sponsor a local children’s sports team, and doing so not only increase the number of impressions the business makes in the community, but it also paints a positive picture of the business in the public eye. Because of this, consumers will be more willing to patronize these businesses. By following just a few easy tips, most businesses can greatly increase their presence in the public eye.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

While drinking alcohol poses serious health risks, drinking alcohol while pregnant amplifies the health risks of the mother and her unborn child, increasing the potential for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

In the U.S. more than 130,000 pregnant women consume enough alcohol to put their unborn children at risk each year for FAS, according to the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

With those stats it’s no wonder that the national organization also revealed that one in every 750 U.S. infants are born with problems as a result of fetal alcohol syndrome, and that more than 40,000 U.S. children are born each year with fetal alcohol effects. The best advice: Simply abstain from alcohol during your pregnancy.

Consider the Impact of Drinking While Pregnant
Fetal alcohol syndrome is a serious condition that occurs only as a result of drinking during pregnancy. The effects of this dangerous combination not only affect the infant’s physical appearance, it can also affect its brain development, which leads to lifelong learning and behavioral deficits.

Children who are born with FAS bear the burden of mental and physical impairments that range from behavioral disorders to severely impaired cognitive function, ranging from mild learning disabilities to mental retardation. Their appearances are also affected and they typically have distinctly small facial features, including small heads, small eye openings and short noses. The groove between the nose and the upper lip is usually undefined and the upper lip is typically very thin. Most children affected by FAS have trouble with socialization and developing personal relationships. Bear in mind that all of this follows the affected child into adulthood.

Still, there’s hope.

Researchers are finding ways to prevent and reverse the alcohol-related brain damage found in people with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) by using treatments such as medication and activities that teach complex motor skills.
Using a rat model, researchers found that skills training as a result of using an obstacle course led to reorganization in the brains of adult rats that had been prenatally exposed to alcohol. The researchers hope that the same results can be produced in human brains.

It’s well known that marijuana use has strange effects on the brain, including distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, and interruptions in learning and memory. Many doctors and scientists do studies on these effects utilizing sanctioned marijuana they grow using hydroponic systems. And while these effects are likely to wear off over time, new studies are showing that there are some long-term effects that are associated with brain function and chronic marijuana use.

Research has revealed that long-term use of marijuana can cause changes in the brain similar to the changes observed in the brains of people who abuse other major drugs. The findings are based on studies conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which found that cannabinoid withdrawal in animals that are chronically exposed to marijuana leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system and changes in dopamine-carrying nerve cells. Dopamine is closely linked with the brain’s motivation and reward system, which is affected by all forms of drugs.

Addictive Behavior
To counteract the feelings of withdrawal, which can include sleeplessness and irritability, the brain seeks more marijuana. Incidentally, this sets the stage for addictive and habitual behaviors, as the brain begins seeking out the effects of marijuana to stave off the feelings of withdrawal. When the effects of marijuana have peaked, some turn to other drugs to mitigate the feelings of withdrawal. This is why marijuana has been dubbed the “gateway drug,” as some users begin with marijuana use, and once they achieve a tolerance, they turn to harder drugs to achieve a better and faster high.

Mental Distress
While using marijuana is stereotypically associated with trying to achieve a feeling of relaxation, researchers have found an association between chronic marijuana use and increased feelings of depression, anxiety, stress and suicidal ideation. It’s unknown whether marijuana is the cause for these feelings, or if it simply amplifies them or serves as a form of self-medication. It’s also been noted that high doses of marijuana can cause acute psychotic reaction in users with or without a prior history of mental illness. High doses of marijuana can also trigger an onset of mental illness or cause a relapse in patients with an existing mental illness.

Substance abuse is also called as drug abuse. Here the substances refer to anything that people use in a way that promotes harmful effects of the substance to the users. Substance abuse is not restricted to tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. It could also be excessive and harmful usage of drug prescriptions for a medical condition.

Substance abuse is a medical disorder as well as a behavioral disorder. Substances that induce a psychoactive effect are highly preferred for this kind of behavior. Psychoactive substances affect mental states and processes.

Substance abuse causes dependence syndrome. Dependence syndrome is a condition that affects people who repeatedly use a substance. After a point of time, the substance controls their day-to-day activities. This makes it difficult for the affected person to prioritize other things than looking for ways and excuses to use this substance.

Illegal drugs can be classified into three categories: stimulants, sedatives, and opiates. Stimulants like cocaine and nicotine excite the nervous system. Sedatives like alcohol calm down a person. Opiates are derivatives of opium. Opium is known to induce partial consciousness. Heroin is an example of an opiate drug.

Heroin and cocaine have the highest addiction-quotients. In other words, these drugs cause a combination of psychological and physical dependence that leaves the affected person unable to quit using it completely. Some people take self-medications to alter their mental processes. This might be a result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD) or general stress. Self-medication is the use of over-the-counter drugs, to relieve stress, or other psychological problems.

There are many symptoms of substance abuse. The general symptoms are: high and uncharacteristic irritability, chronic depression, alcoholism, forgetfulness, promiscuity, breaking laws, antisocial behavior, and morbid orientations.

The causes of substance abuse are mainly attributed to the quality of the adolescent years. Parental negligence will cause teenagers to adopt these behaviors. Peers and companions also influence the overall perception of health and well being in adolescent minds. It is important to also factor-in socialization skills and patterns, in that, it plays a huge role in total abstinence or total adoption of substance addictions.

There are hundreds of thousands of people around the world who try out a drug or substance for the first time on any given them. Not all of these people attempt taking a drug again and many of them never take any form of addictive drugs once they have experienced the thrill of trying out something new. Yet, there are several people from amongst those who try drugs for the first time who will not only take drugs again but are at a greater risk of abuse and addiction.

One of the primary factors that lead to addiction is mental stress and disorders. If a person is going through a tough phase in life and has high levels of emotional and mental anxiety, there is a higher chance that such a person would repeatedly use drugs as a means of escape. Substance abuse provides them with a supposedly easy solution to the depression and so mentally stressed people are more likely to move on to addiction.

If a child has grown up in a family where drug/ substance abuse was an issue, such children are more likely to follow suit. In a psychological response to making their childhood family life seem normal, children coming from families with a history of drug abuse fail to realize that there is anything wrong with substance abuse. It is extremely dangerous when a person considers addiction to be “normal” as they are not only prone to becoming addicts themselves but are eventually more difficult to treat as well.

It also very likely that children who have grown up in families suffering from addiction also have a history of child abuse. Parents who are addicts often neglect their children and can be abusive as well, leading to traumatic situations for the child. Having a troubled childhood and drugs being freely available in the household leads to children using drugs at an early age, which again leads to an addiction that is more intense and difficult to treat. Children from such families need to be monitored or they might become victims themselves.

Addictions are strong urges toward a harmful substance or an action. They don’t discriminate and can affect anyone at anytime. Substance dependency can be a devastating matter for a family to endure. If a person is struggling or she’s tried to stop the behavior on multiple times without success, family members should step in and help the person find guidance and direction to get her life back on track. If the person who suffers with the challenge of the substance abuse is open to help, you can use motivational tools to encourage her to begin the healing process.

People suffering from addiction aren’t all the same nor do they look alike. Many are professionals in corporate settings who go to work everyday, hold meetings, shop for groceries, and raise a family. For them, the dependency may be more difficult to cease, since they have an image to maintain and are fearful that someone will find out about their problem. It’s also noteworthy to mention that maintaining a drug habit is costly and creates a financial burden for the dependent person.

With a good program and a plan of intervention that will last awhile, a person can kick the drug habit. In addition to the program, the person will need some other type of motivation to help him realize the great things he can enjoy once he stabilizes his life. If he is in significant debt, which is very common, getting him to do a bill consolidation is effective in showing him how much money he will have left over on a regular basis by consolidating bills. A person may become motivated to work harder to cease the drug habit if she sees that there will be financial resources to buy other things like cars, home furnishings, or clothes. The process of consolidating debt can be very effective, motivating, and endearing when someone shares with an addict all the things he can enjoy with a life.

The state of Tennessee is unusual in its geography, in that it is bordered by eight other states. The state and interstate highway systems cross and recross the four major cities, allowing for easy transport of drugs across the borders, and drug trafficking in neighboring states heavily impacts Tennessee. Tennessee is considered a “user” state, a trans-shipment state, and is not a major source of drugs except for locally grown marijuana.

The population of Tennessee is around 5,750,000. Its state prison population is around 40,000, and another 40,000 are on probation. In 2006, Tennessee was ranked second in the nation in violent crime.

In 2003, estimates of drug users in the state were around 300,000. In 2004, drug seizures included 571 kilograms of cocaine, 64.1 kilograms of heroin, 70.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, 2,034 kilograms of marijuana, 10,500 tablets of ecstasy, and 889 methamphetamine laboratories. Given the statistics and ranking of the state, Tennessee drug treatment is important and should increasingly be a focal point for government and private agencies.

The population under 18 years old is 1,500,000, and in 2007, there were 100,000 investigations into child abuse. The state’s youth are very much at risk, and steps should be taken to ensure their safety. An increased focus on law enforcement and the regulation of the impacted families’ neighborhoods are needed. More refined, applicable education standards within the public schools can lead to greater responsibility being taken by both children and adults.

While perhaps expensive, drug treatment centers can aid in the long-term health of Tennessee’s population. Pro-treatment marketing and facility awareness can also aid in ending drug use and violence by removing the stigma that might be associated with drug assistance.

It is necessary for an addict, especially an alcoholic, to quit cold turkey when they stop using. Alcoholics cannot have one drink and be done with it. One drink is simply the gateway to more drinking and so it must be avoided at all cost. However, going off of a chemically dependent substance is one of the hardest things to do initially. It’s never easy quitting cold turkey and the detox itself can put you in a physically compromised state that could lead to hospitalization or even death. So if you are about make the decision to quit cold turkey you should understand that ins and outs of initial detox.

First you have to know that the severity of your symptoms during detox are usually dependant on how much you are dependant on the alcohol. In most cases the result of death during detox is usually in the case of patients who have had a severe alcohol dependency for years. So detoxing shouldn’t scare you to that extent. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be prepared.

The one thing you need to take care of before you decide to go cold turkey is consult a physician. Assuming you aren’t going the route of a rehab facility which will have doctors, nurses, and trained technicians to help you, then a doctor is your best bet. Be honest and upfront about the length and severity of your alcohol dependency so that your doctor can tell you what to expect and how to go about treating it.

Know that regardless of the length and depth of the dependency that there will be some physical as well as emotional adjustments that should be made. Vomiting, nausea, followed by symptoms like irritability and depression are all common symptoms of someone going through detox. Now, once again the severity that you will feel these symptoms depend a lot on you and your alcohol dependency but that doesn’t mean that mean it isn’t worth trying. It is a long hard road to recovery and the beginning and be the hardest but it’s always worth it.

When it comes to your insurance policies, you want to make sure you have the best coverage for your needs. Having adequate coverage can be the difference between losing your only mode of transportation due to an accident and getting a replacement vehicle. It can be the difference between paying off a car that no longer works because you totaled it and having to pay the remaining balance out of pocket. For health insurance, it can be the difference between getting an expensive test to confirm a diagnosis and not getting treatment. Why face a difficult time when you can get insurance policies to fit your needs?

The Internet is a great tool for managing your policies. You can look for auto insurance quotes to find out which company offers the lowest rates. In some cases, you can customize the search options to compare polices that offer the same amount of coverage, have the same deductible, and take into consideration your driving history. This way you’ll know if you’re comparing apples to apples or apples to oranges. You can do the same thing with your health insurance policy.

Many insurance providers now offer online portals where you can review your health and auto insurance policies. With a health insurance company, you can access a list of in-network providers and search by your zipcode to find a doctor, a hospital, or a specialist in your area. Some companies even allow you to check the status of a claim online.

Car insurance companies also let you do several things online, like updating your contact information and paying your bill online. Some allow you to review your policies online. This can be beneficial if you need to make adjustments to your policy to increase the amount of coverage for certain categories. With insurance providers using the Internet, managing your health and auto insurance needs can be a breeze.

A drug addict faces many obstacles and tough decisions in their road to sobriety. There are more than a few things to think of if they have any hopes of getting better. One of those things begins from the moment they decide to go clean and that’s the process of drug detox. This is not something any addict looks forward to. The mental and physical toll it takes on your body can be enormous and so it’s important to ask yourself the important question of where you want to do your rehab: at home or as part of a facility.

It seems like an easy choice but for some their comfort zone is at home and so it poses an issue. However the choice to do detox at a rehab facility makes the most sense for addicts. First of all the level of care is better than anything you could get at home. You are going to be dealing a top notch doctors, you are working with highly skilled nurses and technicians who are trained to deal with any situation that may arise during the course of your detox. As it has been explained, detox can take a toll on the body and result in some very serious medical situations and it’s certainly beneficial to have a trained medical professional, on site, in case of a complication.

The other issue is that of privacy and distraction. An addict at home may still feel obligated or perhaps feels a little motivated to go and fulfill family duties. He may have a hard time staying away from triggers in the home or relationships that might prove to be in direct conflict with their sobriety. That’s why it’s important to have a rehab facility go through the process. Not only will they keep distractions out they will make sure that the detox is happening in a clean facility. This allows an addict to clear their mind and simply focus on getting better rather than worry about the pressures they feel and face at home every day.

Medical tests are important. If your doctor thinks you should have a test, then it’s probably a good idea. It may be an attempt to diagnose you with something, but it could also be an attempt to rule out a particular problem. No matter which one of those things your doctor is trying to do, you don’t want to ignore an important medical test just because you don’t have a lot of money. If the test isn’t right away, you might be able to save up for it. If you need it more quickly, though, you could consider using a prepaid credit card and then paying it off over time.

The most important thing is that you get the test. Worrying about how you’ll pay for it shouldn’t be an issue, and will only cause you stress that’s not healthy. It’s better when you can just get the test and know that things will be all right financially, since that’s one less worry you’ll have to deal with. Then you can just focus on the test and getting the results, so you’ll know what the next step is. Often medical tests come back and show no serious problems, so try not to get too worried about it.

No matter what’s wrong, it’s better to know so you don’t go through life wondering. Most medical conditions are very treatable, too, so finding out what the problem is means that you can get treatment and feel better faster. It could even prevent a much more serious problem down the road, which is great news. It’s natural to be a little concerned when you’re sent for medical testing, but try to relax and put worries out of your mind. There’s no point in getting upset until you know for sure if there’s something to worry about.

While technically, in custom poster printing you can actually do whatever you have in your mind, there are still a few priority things that you should focus on and set in certain practical and original way. You want your poster to reflect your feelings and emotions especially if you are using art to help heal your substance abuse issues.

Custom poster printing is not just about tweaking a few things. This is not true customization. To make a truly original and effective color poster, you need to develop creative concepts for a few key important elements. Let me give you five of the major priority custom elements in poster printing. By focusing your efforts on these five elements, your color poster designs should become truly customized and original.
1. The poster dimensions – The first thing that you should always customize are your poster dimensions . You don’t really need to follow convention and use the first and most convenient poster dimension for you. Try to actually decide on a poster length, width and height that will work for your specific design as well as your specific poster deployment strategy. Customize it so that all the spaces work for your required design, and of course it should also fit in all the areas where you want your posters to be. So try to think about your poster dimensions carefully and customize it to fit your design and deployment needs.

2. The poster printing material – Another important thing to customize in your custom posters is the poster printing material like paper, ink, colors etc. Do not let the poster printing company dictate the materials that they will use for your posters printing. Make sure that you customize the paper materials, the ink choice and the coatings/finishes for your posters , so that they are ideal for your design. Choose something that enhances the look of your design as well as makes your color posters become more durable and tough.

The quest to get clean after battling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol can be costly. The more severe you addiction is the more it can cost you to get clean. This is a scary proposition to anyone who is looking to get clean but not go broke. When you factor in the sad reality that most people have a hard time getting clean on the first try and it can make it seem like a financially hopeless situation but there are ways to get clean and not go broke in the process.

The first thing you need to do before entering a treatment program is give your health insurance company a call. They are going to be able to give you all the information you need as it relates to your treatment options.

They will tell you what they cover. This is important because not all insurance companies pay for the same thing. While almost all insurance companies pay for some form of drug or alcohol treatment not all pay for the same type of treatment. Some pay for in patient treatment(where you would spend the night at the facility) where other pay for out patient(where you may go for a couple of hours a week or several hours a day)

They will also tell you how much they will be willing to pay each day. This means they may say they cover 100 dollars of treatment a day regardless of how you receive that treatment. This means you must find a facility that charges that or less or you must find a way to come up with the difference.

They will tell you how long they will cover treatment for. They may only cover 21 days of continuous treatment or cover six months of treatment. They may ask for a doctors referral or you may have to be admitted by your primary care physician. This is important because if you stay in too long then you are responsible for all payment of anything over the allotted days. So be careful and research before going into treatment.

The most important part of a road to recovery from drug and alcohol abuse is that you get the important treatment you need early on. This is not always as easy to accomplish as it seems. The rising cost of living well in this country alone cannot be afforded by everyone but nothing should ever stop you from making a decision that is not only best for you but that will positively impact the people around you. If you are in need of drug rehab assistance and are without medical insurance then you may still be able to get the help you need.

First you can head over to the local church. This can be a scary idea to some who are afraid of being influenced by a particular religions views. This is understandable but know that these churches are not offering assistance with the promise of faith in their God. They are looking to help and that’s it. Most often there are support groups that meet often and are run by trained professionals who can give you the help you need without making you go through a religious conversion. The most important thing is getting better so you have to explore every option.

Calling your local university is another great way to get yourself help at a reduced rate. The idea is to locate a school who has a psychology program or a family counseling program. From there you can contact the head of the department and see if they offer special services. Often times these schools have highly trained students who are looking to get in some real life hours working with those suffering from addiction. This could be a great way for them to help you and with no money at all. It might not seem like the most attractive option but you should know these students have a teacher that is a trained professional who is helping them navigate your wellness path. And help comes in many forms so don’t balk at the idea of someone helping you for free. It happens all the time.

If you don’t know that smoking is bad for your health, you’ve been living underground for the last two decades. In many ways, it’s the worst form of substance abuse. Alcohol is an addictive substance, but an alcoholic usually doesn’t directly ruin a non-alcoholic’s health. Likewise, narcotics are bad substances, but a narcotics user does not contaminate another person’s health in most cases. But smoking, by its very nature, not only ruins the smoker’s health, but also the health of every other person nearby who happens to inhale the smoke wafting from the end of the cigarette. So, smoking is a societal hazard and is fundamentally different from any other substance abuse.

Electronic cigarette cartridges are used in e-cigarettes. These are devices that look like an ordinary cigarette and deposit a small dose of nicotine directly into the user’s mouth. Since no burning of tobacco is involved, using an electronic cigarette does not impact the health of the people around the smoker. Better still, this product helps smokers reduce their level of addiction by letting them use nicotine in small doses in a controlled manner. Since it is possible to control the amount of nicotine consumed, an electronic cigarette can gradually reduce the need to smoke by slowly reducing the amount of nicotine going into the smoker’s body.

Electronic cigarettes are an effective way to quit smoking because they do not involve the drastic step of trying to completely stop smoking. Such strong approaches to quitting seldom work.

Electronic cigarettes, on the other hand, let a smoker slowly give up the nicotine. There are no drastic steps involved, and this device even eliminates secondhand smoke for bystanders. The device is available online. When you consider how much it costs to replenish your supply of smokes, an e-cigarette doesn’t cost much.

It is estimated that more than 1.2 billion people, all over the world, smoke cigarettes. Surprisingly, most people are aware of the detrimental health effects that can result from cigarette smoking. Heart disease, mouth and lung cancer, breathing problems, as well as many other health ailments have been linked to smoking cigarettes. Even though this information is widely known, tobacco users continue to smoke – feeling that the benefits of smoking outweigh the health risks that are involved.

However, there is now a better solution for smokers who are concerned about the damage they are doing to their bodies. The electric cigarette, also known as an e-cigarette, gives the user the same associated feelings that they would experience when smoking a standard cigarette, but the smoker does not inhale any smoke, carbon monoxide or tar. E-cigarettes are designed to look like regular cigarettes and allow the user to control their level of nicotine intake. Another bonus of this product is that it doesn’t produce any ash. Rather, E-cigarettes use a rechargeable battery and nicotine cartridges. Say goodbye to ash stains on your clothes! In addition, they also don’t require a flame to be lit, so no more lost lighters!

In the past few years, electric cigarettes have been gaining popularity; there are different brands of these cigarettes that offer a variety of flavors including menthol, apple coffee, strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. Many companies claim they taste just like a regular cigarette, but there is another more important advantage: they can be used in public areas where cigarettes are not allowed since no smoke is produced! These products are also more cost effective: one e-cigarette lasts longer than a regular cigarette resulting in a savings of up to 75% (estimated) on their cigarette costs. So, the next time you are craving a smoke, consider this: e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes.

Quite often a man thinks that his role is to be the breadwinner and rock for his friends and family. These self-imposed standards are often very hard to live up to. As a result, some men might find themselves stumbling into an addictive cycle of substance abuse. The result can be inflicting emotional pain not only on themselves but also on the very people they are struggling to protect. When a man has reached that point in his addictions where he needs to find a better way, he should consider the benefits of attending Men’s Rehab to deal with his issues once and for all.

It’s often very difficult for a man to open themselves up and appear vulnerable. In many ways this is what perpetuates the substances abuse in the first place. A man would way drink away his pain rather then bring it to the surface and confront it. The irony is that only in confronting that pain can they truly begin to heal. At a mens rehab they’ll find a safe place where they can take off the mask and share their struggles with other like-minded men who are facing the same struggles. Working through these issues at a rehab facility is only the first step towards complete recovery.

Sooner or later anyone who has gone to a treatment center is going to have to rejoin the outside world. This can be a very challenging time in the recovery journey. Men who are going through this process are going to find themselves faced with all kinds of social situations which could lead to a stumble. That’s why working with therapists and counselors at a men’s rehab can help them set up a manageable plan of coping with the stress factors. Will it always be a struggle? Of course. Will it be worth it? More then imagined.

Most people in the US have had to go to the pharmacy and fill a prescription at some point or another. Prescription drugs, written by doctors, are typically more effective at curing certain conditions and ailments or making them manageable than over the counter products.

Prescriptions also have more side effects and potential problems than a few aspirin. For that reason, it’s important to get plenty of information about your drugs before you take them. The following are some places to get info on prescription drugs:

Your doctor. Be sure to ask your doctor any questions you may have about your prescription. This includes side effects, when you should take it, whether you should take it with food or drink or on an empty stomach, who to call if you have a reaction, and whether it interacts with any other drugs you might take.

Websites. There are many different websites that can provide you with everything you need to know about your medication. You can research common side effects and other things that may affect you. Some sites even allow you to enter multiple drugs to see how they react.

Pharmacist. A pharmacist is an excellent resource for info on prescription drugs. Not only do they fill prescriptions, but they know a great deal about each type of drug, including ingredients, side effects, and dangers. You can either ask your pharmacist questions in person when you drop your prescription off, or you can usually call the pharmacy.

Books. There are reference books and guides designed specifically to provide information on prescription drugs. You can even find a whole section of them in the library. The downside of using books for info, however, is they can become outdated quickly.

These are just a few of the places you can find reliable prescription information.
